The General Cafe

Gourmet cafe hidden in plain sight in the Altona light industrial area. Came in for a quick bite on a Monday and it was so good I came back for breakfast on the Tuesday! I assume the chef has a restaurant background since he's using premium ingredients, makes some of the sauces inhouse, and even warms the plates. I recommend the salami focaccia – simple but perfectly crisp with good salami and cheese.

Best coffee in the area without a doubt. Frazer is a great guy, super friendly, and makes a perfect coffee everytime. I stop in every day I am in the office for my morning coffee.

I had a great dining experience here. The café is spacious and filled with natural light. A variety of seating areas are also on hand to try. The food is fresh and a joy to eat. The coffee I had hit the spot too. Not pricey either. The staff were friendly and quick in bringing out my order. Dine here when you can. It's worth it.

Delicious jaffles! So many vegetarian options and so well priced. We loved the chill vibes, friendly staff and yummy food and coffee (and Chai).

Best iced latte in the west. Loved the atmosphere from the moment we walked in and went back 3 times since. Enjoyed the brekkie burger as well but would have loved it even more with a beef patty on there. Staff is super friendly and service is quick and efficient.

The latte here was superb and the food was insanely good! The owner combined such simple brunch dishes but the flavours and seasoning incorporated, made it so uniquely delicious! The owner was so lovely and made sure we were comfortable and even checked on us to make sure everything was okay. Will definitely be coming back!! The atmosphere was nice (unfortunately, not the best views) but definitely one of the nicest cafes I’ve been to!

The General Cafe has been my local go-to cafe for a long time now. I genuinely don’t think you’ll find anywhere better, everything about it is perfect for me. Something about the vibe maybe, because I enter the cafe and immediately feel like I belong here. The coffee is good, the food has never let me down, and the service is top notch. Plus, the music in the background has always been a benefit. The big windows and communal space help me feel that I’m not alone here, and that’s the reason why I keep coming here compared to the isolatiory-esque cafes where you could spend hours and feel like you’ve seen no one. All in all, please do come here, show support for your local.

Great place for a morning coffee or quick lunch. Fraser the owner is great for a laugh and friendly service. Be sure to ask him to remove the chives from his egg cheese and chive toasty, it’s sure to get a smile out of him.
